Summer Learning Journey Day 1 Activity 1

The Legend of New Zealand
Today we need to list some facts about New Zealand.
Here are my facts

New Zealand is also called Aotearoa which means "land of the long white cloud"

Queen Elizabeth II is officially the Queen of New Zealand she is represented in our country by a Governor General who is Dame Patsy Reedy. She has been our Governor General since 2016.

30% of New Zealand is covered by forest.

Bonus Fact: Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sunrise because it is 496 kilometres away from the International Date Line

Summer Learning Journey 2018 Day 2 Activity 2

Fabulous Ferns
Today we had to name all the NZ sports teams with the words "fern" in their names.

There are 7 teams that have fern in their name - Silver Ferns (Netball), Black Ferns (Rugby), Tall Ferns (Basketball), Kiwi Ferns (League), Football Ferns (Football), White Ferns (Cricket), Ice Fernz (Ice Hockey!)

Black Ferns
These are my top 3.

Black Ferns (Rugby)
White Ferns (Cricket)
Tall Ferns (Basketball)

I like the Black Ferns Jersey because it is simple and because I like the hidden designs in it.

White Ferns

I like the White Ferns jersey because it has a
cool fern design. I also like it because it stands
out in the pink.

Tall Ferns

I like the Tall Ferns singlet because it has cool
designs down the side. Also because it is simple and it is a cool looking black/grey.

W6T4

Image result for touch rugbyYesterday we had our first game of touch. We bet K Main 6-0. I scored the opening try. Then I had to ref another game, they drew 3-3. I got a bit of sunburn, again. I play for Blaketown Rugby. Touch isn't rugby or league, it is it's own, competitive game. We are a good team. All of our team go to our school, so we can practise together. All up we are going to have a great season. Hopefully no more sunburn!

Maths

This week we were doing averages and ratios. We made drawings and docs to show our learning.

West Coast Atheletics

On Wednesday I represented the Grey District at the West Coast Athletics. I got 4th in my 1200 and probably 4th in High Jump and Long Jump. I enjoyed it. I got really bad sunburn. I am not going to Canterbury Athletics in Ashburton. I had a really great time and I look forward to it next year, if I get in!

Country Study

This term we have been doing country studies. My country is Albania. I have heard of Albania but I didn't know much about it. This is mine.

Post Term 4 Week 3

This week we wrote a narrative about a picture relating to Halloween. Have fun reading!

One cold, dark night I was  wandering through the forest with my friend. We come across a barn like, 2 storey house. The house was old and creaky, when the cold air blew. My white Adidas trainers was covered in a thick, sticky,  brown mud that sploshed and splashed as I walk through the forest. I reach the house. The door opened. A man stopped. “Ahhhhhhhhh” he screamed as he fell to the ground and behind him an ugly man with a knife laughed and limped towards me. My friend screams and I know instantly he got caught. He yelled, “run, tell my…”, I heard a bang and blood shooting out. I start running, the wind howling at my face. I turn around. My friend lying on the ground helpless and dead . The other man was slow and was running then he stopped, and rummaged through his pocket to find a slingshot, (how was it in there??!!) loaded with round metal balls. He fires and it narrowly misses me. I duck behind a tree catching my breath.  He walks past, muttering under his breath “I will catch that boy”. I run back to the house but I trip. No. He realises I tripped. He fires another ball. Twang! I realise I was caught in a fallen branch. I wriggle and hear a deafening snap. It wasn’t the branch. It was my ankle, clutching at it I silently scream. I realise that I have either broken my ankle or fractured it. I suddenly think about my friend. We could both die here this same night! I put that out of my mind and force myself to run. I run limping, my ankle dangling as I run, well I kinda hobble my way to the house thinking that I shouldn’t of gone adventuring. Then I realise. My phone, it’s usually in my left pocket but I wasn’t. I turn around, the phone is lying on the ground, ringing. The man picks it up and hurls it towards me. I end up grabbing it with all my mite. I slide the answer button, I was a fraction of a second away from help. Then it returned to my home screen with a notification reading.  Hi, where r u, looking for u. Please ring me back.
Mum.
My phone is suddenly smashed by another ball as it hits my phone. He was probably 5 or 6 metres behind me now, showing his ugly face with missing teeth and an awkward looking nose. I goose-step and sprint, well limped and a bit of tango-like running. He stopped and brought out what seemed like lollies but I don’t think they were. Simply put, they were poison covered in royal blue Starburst lollies. Designed to drug me so this man could probably kill me. I stopped to examine him. He looked familiar. Before I was here I was in town, at Burger King. He was in a Burger King uniform. Instantly I knew who it was. His name was Ric Harden, brother to NBA star James. Those two are completely opposite. Ric seemed to work 24/7 at Burger King. He obviously wasn’t cooking burgers at this time. He was a murderer, who works for a major food chain and his brother is MVP in the NBA. Wow. He was know dressed head to toe in dark green hunting kit, not hunting deer, but hunting kids! I start to think about my friend. He got killed by a murderer, adding to his total. I start running towards the house. Again. My plan was, grab my friend, sling him over my shoulder like a fireman and run towards the rising sun in hope of finding someone. I am running out of energy and and dying for food and water. This guy would not offer me any of those things. Then I see my friend still in the same position. I snatch him from the ground and run for the sun. The man sees me and gets to the house to open a rusty garage door to find a Kawasaki KLF 220. He revs it and makes his way for me. What will I do. The quad has a top speed of 70-80 km hr, I cannot outrun that. I am terrified and I’m sure my friend would be to. He is eyeing me up and I don’t have time to look at him. I know it probably doesn’t work but I should try being as aerodynamic as I can. But unfortunately my friend weighs around 50-55 Kg but he seems a whole load heavier because I am out of energy and tired. The quad bike is getting closer and I start to slow down. Yes. In the distant I see a few torchlights. I run towards them in hope of being someone. I think I’m dreaming. Nah. I scream. “HELP!”.  The next minute they start running towards me. “Mate, we’ll come and get you!”. 1 minute later I see people dressed in black saving me and my dead friend. Then Ric is escorted into a police van. I pass out from it all.

I groan as I wake up in a dirty cell. A man is at the door. “Come out, I need an interview”. He asks me a heap of questions. Then he brings me out and I walk out onto a street. “ The guy is serving his time” The man says. I’ll drop you home. I hop into his Rolls Royce. We drive to my house. I am welcomed by my family and feel way better. Then I go into full detail of my adventure.

THE END

Athletics

Yesterday we had athletics. My highlight was me getting 2nd in the 1200m, when I didn't think I was going to do it. I got a few 1st's and quite a bit of 2nd's and not many 3rd's. The one I didn't like was the discus and shot put because I kept walking out the front. I had been practising 1200m for a while because that is the only one I'm good at.

T4 W1 Writing

This week we were starting a descriptive writing piece. I have made a brainstorm with a few ideas and sentences. Here is mine, it was off the top of my head!

Reflection W2T3

Reflection
This week we have been busy learning lots of things, such as making our worm farm, learning about probability, doing graphs and a lot more.

Maths
This week we have been learning about making graphs. Kaleb and I made a pie graph about our classes favourite Super Rugby teams ahead of the Crusaders vs Lions final on Saturday. Here is our graph. We have also been learning about probability which we will carry on with next week.

Topic.
For topic Kaleb, Alex and I have been making a worm farm along with our school caretaker's help. It is made from a old sink and frames made of wood. To start we are getting some coconut fibre and soil to home around 400 tiger worms. We are really excited. We have been collecting food scraps from classrooms to feed the worms.

Reflection T1 Week 1 & 2

Hi.
The school holidays went really fast. I visited Wanaka & Timaru. I did around 70 kms on my bike. I traveled 13 hours in the car.

These couple of weeks have been about knowing stuff about other people. And we also have already finished 1 piece of art. This is it.
We also have made acrostic poems. Then we made 2 examples. These are mine.

I chose surfing and cricket because, 1 I have been surfing for 3 years and I love surfing. Next I have enjoyed playing backyard cricket over the summer and I enjoy watching cricket.

Thanks for reading my first blog post for 2018, also enjoy Brisbane Global 10s this weekend.

Summer Learning Journey 2017-2018 Day 5 Bonus Activity

Blade runner 2049.
Today's question was to write a description of New Zealand in 80-90 years from now.We had to describe; what we will eat, where would we live and what jobs would we have This is my description.

Where we will live?
We would live in floating cubes that comes down when you want, we will have underground garages. The houses will be 50 meters by 50 meters because it is a cube. Kitchens will be controlled by robots who will overcook your food. Showers will be like a  Human car-wash it will soap you spray you and dry you. Your bed will be electric, it will be called a sandwich bed. It makes a mould of your preferred sleeping position and will leave you room to manoeuver.

What jobs will we have?
The chance of having a job is 0.99 % Because Google will make working robots. Although I do not think robots are waterproof, so that leaves swim instructors, marine biologists and that is really it.

What will we eat?
In 2099 I do not think we will have animals or grass. We will eat robot meat, lab produced meat and vegetables. Everything will be cleared to make one gigantic city. So no fresh; crops, meat, fish, veges. Robots will cook and possibly overcook your food, which means no one will do anything for themselves, so they just become marine biologists or swimming instructors.

Other thoughts.
Robots will take over parliament and emergency services. Cars will still take people places but not with driver. Sport will be no longer (unfortunately). People won't watch TV, they will be plodding round on phones the size of a smart TV. Kids will have the choice of going to school (which will be taught by robots) or have surgery on your brain to have all information of the world inserted into your head, and we will have a 30 billion Albert Einsteins.

Summer Learning Journey 2017-2018 Day 1 Activity 1

Celebrating a win
Our activity today was to explain what our family does when they celebrate a special event, like birthdays.

In my family we celebrate birthdays. In the summer break is when I have my birthday. We celebrate this by me getting up at 7:00 to have a birthday breakfast (if this was my mum's it would be in bed!) but I have mine at the table with my family. We celebrate by giving gifts, this year I was very lucky and I received what I really wanted. I often have my friends come over (if we aren't away camping) This year we went to the pool and had lots of fun. Another way we celebrate is by my mum and dad making a birthday cake. This year it was a mountain biking themed one. I used lego people for fans of a biker who was on a lego bike. It looked really cool. I know I am lucky to celebrate my birthday the way that I do.

Summer Learning Journey 2017-2018 Day 4 Bonus Activity

Singing a different tune.
Today we had to write down the lyrics to our favorite song. Mine is "Don't Give It Up" by a New Zealand band Six60. We can't cut and paste the lyrics! This is it. The link to the song

Don't Give it up eh
I'm telling you, I'm telling you I
Won't give it up
No, no, no
So don't even, don't even try

People lie
All they do is dance between the lines
They won't change
Fake gold chains
And shades to hide those eyes
I can't complain
It's just the nature of these times, times

Don't give it up eh
I'm telling you, I'm telling you I
Won't give it up
No, no, no
So don't even, don't even try

oh, oh, oh, ohhhhh

I was you, trying to find a way to waste my youth
ups and downs
round and round
the world it turns on you

I can't complain
It's just the nature of these times, times
ohhh, times

Don't give it up eh
I'm telling you, I'm telling you I
Won't give it up
No, no, no
So don't even, don't even try

Oh oh oh oh ayy, oh oh oh oh.

Don't give it up eh
I'm telling you, I'm telling you I
Won't give it up
No, no, no
So don't even, don't even try

Don't give it up eh
I'm telling you, I'm telling you I
Won't give it up
No, no, no
So don't even, don't even try

Oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh

Summer Learning Journey 2017-2018 Day 1 Activity 2

 Lord of the Rings
It cost 300 Million Dollars to produce the Lord of the Rings movies. Instead of producing movies, I would spend it on:
  • I would buy my own Island and name it Willopolis, population - unknown as I would invite all of my family and friends and those who need shelter.  It would be interesting to see who would come with me!
  • Next a mansion to go on Willopolis but also I would make sure that everyone on the island had somewhere to live and a job to do as well as being well fed.
  • A garage for all my fast cars - McLaren P1 and Tesla Model S
  • With all this money you might start not to exercise so I would make sure that people had bikes to stay fit, like an Intense Tracer and the Santa Cruz V10.
  • I would also have available a tennis court, a rugby pitch, a cricket ground all to be able to be used.
  • I would then save what I have left and donate it to the sport teams that I sponser eg. Crusaders, Canterbury Rugby and Blaketown Rugby team (my rugby team now!)

Summer Learning Journey Activity 2 Day 5

Flying cars
Today's question was, your family is deciding on a new car and you have just learnt to drive. So...

If I'm not reading about rugby, I'm reading about cars, so I know quite a lot about this topic which is why I have detoured my thought to this.
Image result for toyota hilux

This is a life sized Tonka version of my favorite toy car, the Toyota Hilux.  It was made for the 80th birthday of Toyota and the 70th birthday for Tonka.  I would choose this because it is built to take a hammering, which is good when you live on the West Coast! Another thing is that it has a huge engine providing lots of horsepower and torque. It has a 6mm thick bash plate underneath so nothing will hurt its ginormous engine which produces 174 horsepower and 420 Nm torque. To match it, it has 35 inch diameter wheels which has a lift kit, this can lift you 150mm higher. This is the ultimate truck and I know that my dad would really enjoy driving this truck when we are 4wd into remote rivers.  I don't think that my mum would enjoy it as it is too big for her!  I would definitely drive this!

Summer Learning Journey 2017-2018 Day 5 Activity 1

Your Future Self.
In this activity we had to take a moment to look at our future self.

Image result for sports logoAfter I finish High School I would like to go to university and do media studies as I would like to get into Sports Commentary. Then later on work for companies such as Sky TV doing rugby and cricket commentary. Later on I would like to travel overseas and be a broadcaster for sports events such as the Olympics, Rugby World Cup and everything in between!

Summer Learning Journey 2017-2018 Day 4 Activity 2- Country Calender

Country Calendar
Image result for hyundai country calendarI absolutely love Country Calendar. Every Sunday at 7 pm, with no fail my brother and I watch country calendar! It is definitely one of my favourite TV shows!
The question is, what do I think is interesting and challenging about farming?

The interesting things are:

  • The size of machinery has changed. Tractors, ploughs etc are now bigger and more powerful
  • Working with animals is interesting because most people work with people.
  • The technology has changed farming a lot, to farmers it has made it easier. For example the dog collar. Farmers use this technology to control their dogs on the farm. On their phone will be an app which connects to a chip in the dogs body which allows you to control your dog.

The challenging things are:

  • That you may feel isolated as many farms are a good couple of kilometers out of towns/cities.
  • The size of farms can make it difficult to manage
  • Each day your job changes. For example, you could milk the cows on one day and the next day you could be planting crops.
  • That the weather changes. You could be baking in the sun planting. the next day it could be raining really heavy.

Another question was, when you are older would you like to be a farmer. My answer is, yep, certainly. My farm would be a sheep farm. I have my own sheep who had lambs this year! We have 1 Ram, 4 Ewes and each of these ewes had 1 lamb each. So this is good practice for when I am older.

Summer Learning Journey 2017-2018 Day 3 Activity 2- Migration

Migration.
This activity is Day 3 of Week 4 and is activity 2. This activity involves migration. Migration, for example means: You migrate from a different country (say Germany) then if you want to, you can migrate to any country of the world. Although you can't migrate to the country you already live in!

My home town is Greymouth, on the West Coast.

It rains quite a bit! So if you were coming here even during summer, make sure you bring a raincoat!

The best thing about my town is that there are a lot of bike tracks for people to enjoy, just like me!

If you were thinking of coming to Greymouth, you have to visit:

    Image result for greymouth
  • A farm
  • Go to one of our beaches
  • And get wet!
Also in Greymouth there is a lot of places to go from as inland as the Otira Viaduct to the beautiful seaside coast as far north as Karamea and as far south as Haast.

Summer Learning Journey 2017-2018. Day 2, Activity 2

Day 2, Activity 2.

This activity involves your sporting heroes. Mine was really hard I have so many. These are my many sporting heroes.
  • Tim Bateman
  • Richie Mo'unga
  • Reiko Ioane
  • Colin De Grandhomme
  • Rafeal Nadal
But my real sporting hero is Ardie Savea. Here are my reasons why he is my sporting hero.

He plays my favourite sport, Rugby!
Image result for ardie savea try vs highlanders

He is the same position as me so I learn a lot from him from breakdown skills to effective tackling.

He is a regular Hurricanes starting forward for the Hurricanes, All Blacks & the Wellington Lions.

Ardie has 50 Hurricanes points, 20 All Blacks points & 80 Provincial points.

Summer Learning Journey 2017-2018 Day 2, Activity 1

Day 2, Activity 1.
Today we had to right down 3 facts that we didn't know about Richie McCaw. These are mine.

  • He made his provincial debut in 2000 for Canterbury against North Harbour. Where 17 years later he had 34 Canterbury caps.
  • Richie made his Super Rugby debut for the Crusaders back in 2001, against the Hurricanes. He managed to get 110 caps for the Crusaders.
  • Richie made his All Blacks debut on the 17 of November 2001 vs Ireland at Dublin. His All Blacks cap tally hit 148 before he retired from rugby in 2015.
  • He has 135 test points with 27 tries over 14 years of playing for the All Blacks.
